SDG # 15 - Life on Land

Goal 15. Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

  • 15.1: Proportion of land that is degraded over total land area

    • This indicator measures the amount of land that is considered to be degraded, in relation to the total amount of land available. It provides a measure of the extent to which land has been affected by activities such as deforestation, desertification, or soil erosion.

  • 15.2: Forest area as a proportion of total land area

    • This indicator measures the amount of forested land in relation to the total amount of land. It provides a measure of the extent of forests and their impact on the ecosystem and wildlife.

  • 15.3: Forest cover in protected areas

    • This indicator measures the amount of forest cover within protected areas. This provides a measure of the extent to which forests are being protected from degradation or destruction.

  • 15.4: Proportion of important sites for terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity that are covered by protected areas

    • This indicator measures the proportion of important sites for biodiversity, such as wetlands, forests, or areas with high species diversity, that are protected by designated protected areas. It provides a measure of the extent to which biodiversity is being protected.

  • 15.5: Proportion of species threatened with extinction

    • This indicator measures the proportion of species that are considered to be at risk of extinction. It provides a measure of the extent to which biodiversity is being threatened and the urgency of action required to protect it.

  • 15.6: Proportion of degraded or deforested lands restored

    • This indicator measures the proportion of degraded or deforested land that has been restored. It provides a measure of the extent of land restoration efforts and their impact on the environment and biodiversity.

  • 15.7: Total annual emission reductions of greenhouse gases by sources and removals by sinks from forest, cropland and grazing land conversion, and deforestation

    • This indicator measures the total annual reductions of greenhouse gas emissions resulting from forest, cropland, and grazing land conversion, as well as deforestation. It provides a measure of the impact of land use change on climate change.

  • 15.a: Climate-related Spending

    • This indicator measures the amount of spending on activities related to climate change. This includes spending on mitigation and adaptation measures, as well as research and development of new technologies. It provides a measure of the resources being invested in addressing the impacts of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems.

  • 15.8: Protected Area coverage

    • This indicator measures the extent to which protected areas, such as national parks, wildlife reserves, and other designated conservation areas, have been established and are being managed effectively. This includes both terrestrial and marine protected areas.

  • 15.9: Proportion of terrestrial and marine areas protected

    • This indicator measures the proportion of total land and sea area that is protected by parks, wildlife reserves, and other designated conservation areas. The goal is to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable use of natural resources for future generations.
